What the Ceiling Needed to Do in a New Zealand School’s Open Learning Space
2026-03-23
A school in New Zealand was upgrading its open learning space to create a calmer and more comfortable environment for daily teaching, discussion, and shared activities.
Compared with a traditional classroom, this type of setting placed broader demands on the ceiling system, especially in balancing acoustics, safety, and long-term usability.

Compared with a traditional classroom, this type of setting placed broader demands on the ceiling system, especially in balancing acoustics, safety, and long-term usability.

From the early stage of the project, the focus was not limited to surface appearance alone. The ceiling-facing material needed to work effectively within an Acoustic Ceiling system, support the use of Sound-absorbing materials, and remain suitable for a busy education interior.
Requirements related to a fire proof ceiling, Class B1 performance, and stable day-to-day use also shaped the direction of material selection.

Requirements related to a fire proof ceiling, Class B1 performance, and stable day-to-day use also shaped the direction of material selection.
For this application, Airflow-Premium Dot Pattern Facing was introduced as the Ceiling Veil solution. As a Fiberglass Coated Veil, it offered high breathability while helping the ceiling system maintain a better balance between acoustic support, visual consistency, and practical performance in continuous use.
Once completed, the space felt more controlled and more consistent throughout the school day. The result was not defined by one feature alone, but by how well the ceiling solution responded to the actual conditions of the learning environment.
It also showed how a carefully selected facing can be relevant not only in education spaces, but in other interiors such as office ceiling applications where similar expectations apply.
